Creative Writing After School Club!
Open to young writers, readers, storytellers and daydreamers who would like to begin – or have already begun - writing their own story.
Where:
Ellē Cafe, Mt Pleasant, DC
Ages:
Novice Writers = 3rd, 4th, 5th Graders
Apprentice Writers = 6th, 7th, 8th Graders
When:
Tuesdays, September 8 - October 27 (8 weeks)
Novice Writers: 3:45 - 4:45 pm (1 hour)
Apprentice Writers: 5pm - 6:30 (1 hr 30)

Each session will consist of:
Teaching of story-craft elements (such as: dialogue, narrative voice, character development, world building, plot planning…)
Free writing time (including 1-1 feedback and support with the writing tutor)
Sharing and critiquing of each other’s work
Snack provided by Ellē Cafe
In addition to creating their very own original story, your young writer will learn to:
Empower their creative voice and gain artistic ownership
Expand imagination and empathy
Improve planning and structured thinking
Learn to critique and offer constructive criticism
Discover individual written style and voice
Sharpen writing skills to create tension and hold reader attention
Note, these sessions will not focus on the explicit teaching of English spelling and grammar. Instead, we focus on fostering creativity, nurturing imagination and prioritising storytelling.

Novice sessions are for Upper Elementary students; best for 3rd, 4th and 5th graders.
Novice Writers will be guided step-by-step through a chosen story genre (example: “This week, your detective will find a clue that leads them in the wring direction!”)

Apprentice sessions are for Middle School students; best for 6th, 7th, 8th graders.
Apprentice Writers will be given free rein of story genre choice (previous participants have written: fantasy, thriller, graphic novels, poetry).

Notebook and pencils will be provided (BYO personal laptops/tablets if preferred)
Young writers will receive course handout with notes on story craft
An ‘Open Mic’ reading performance will be held on the last session of the series

What: Come explore your creative voice as you develop your very own piece of original writing in any genre.

What: Join us to write an Autumn Mystery! Who stole the prize-winning pumpkins? Who kidnapped the neighbor’s cat? What caused that strange shadow in the park? During this after school series, you will learn to write your very own, thrilling, mystery detective story (just in time for Halloween!)
Cost: $240 for all 8 classes; $35 for drop-in
